What is Heftel Studios?

Heftel Studios is a recording studio that has been in operation since late 2006. We offer recording, mixing, processing, pitch correction, mastering, voiceover work, original music composition, music arranging/notation, and many other services. We have professional-quality equipment, industry-standard Pro Tools software, and trained engineers who will put the time into making your music shine. You can use us for your entire audio project from first tracking session to final CD master, or you can record the music anywhere you want and send the tracks to us for mixing and processing. We specialize in a cappella recording but we can do any genre of music.

What inspired you to launch your own recording studio?

I've been intimately involved in music for many years, having played the piano since I was a little kid and releasing a CD of original piano music as a teenager. I got deeply involved in the a cappella scene at BYU and I have been in many a cappella groups at BYU over the years. I have always had a love for music and got interested in recording when one group of mine decided to purchase equipment to play live gigs and record our own CD. Unfortunately the band fell apart, but the experience I had had in live performance, live sound, and recording proved life-changing and invaluable. I had gotten a taste for recording that wouldn't go away. I ultimately decided to pursue a double degree in Sound Recording Technology and Computer Science at BYU and Heftel Studios was opened soon after!

Can you mix tracks I've recorded elsewhere (home, garage, another studio)?

Absolutely. Through the power of the Internet, you can be located anywhere in the world and still have access to our state-of-the-art facility and processing. You can record tracks anywhere and upload them to our website. Contact us for instructions on how to do that. We accept tracks as ProTools sessions or as industry-standard WAV files. Just make sure they are at least CD quality (recorded at 44.1 kHz, 16 bits per sample). If you don't understand what that means, contact us by email or phone and we'll explain to you in plain English how to get the tracks to us for mixing.

What makes your studio different from other studios?

A focus on quality coupled with low rates make this studio unique. Our engineers are trained in both sound engineering and musicianship, and their skill is unmatched. Quality equipment, state-of-the-art processing techniques and highly-trained professionals ensure the product will be something you can be proud of.

What kinds of processing can you do?

We do many kinds of processing to help make your music shine. During the mixing process, we can apply standard processing algorithms like EQ and compression to give tracks the sonic character, punch, and presence that it needs to stand out from the crowd. Rhythmic flaws can often be adjusted through careful editing. Pitch-correction can help salvage an amazing take with a few flat notes, or make sure every note is in tune. Once the tracks are done, mastering helps add a final finished touch to the whole project, make the tracks sound like they are part of a cohesive album, and bring up volume levels to be on par with the music you hear on the radio.
